2012 Area conference at Swansea

6 branch members from Torquay travelled to the Village Hotel in Swansea for the conference and reunion weekend. We were joined by approx 160 others from 49 branches. A most enjoyable time was had by all and a very warm welcome was given by our Welsh hosts! Friday evening was a "meet and greet" followed by a hot buffet and entertainment from the Swansea male voice choir. The venerable 96 year old President of the Swansea branch welcomed us to Wales.

Saturday morning following breakfast proceedings began with a lively question and answer session on all things RAFA, hosted by Jane Easton, Secretary General and Nigel Bairstow, Area Council Chairman. This was followed by a briefing on the RAF Benevolent Fund. The morning was rounded off with an excellent presentation by 2 serving RAF MT Drivers who gave us a "warts and all" account of current aircraft refuelling operations in Afghanistan. Well done and many thanks to JT and Smiler from the Tactical Supply Wing at Stafford! The afternoon started with an RAF "state of the nation" address followed by the AGM and presentation of trophies and certificates. Once again Torquay did extremely well with a £20,000 Wings Appeal certificate. In fact we achieved the second highest Wings figure for the whole of the Wales, Midlands and South West Area with an actual total of £20,611 in 2011! The standard bearers competed with each other in the hotel car park after the AGM. Saturday evening was the formal served dinner followed by entertainment courtesy of a jazz duo and the absolutely fantastic voice of Mandy Starr with the usual raffle thrown in too! Festivities continued well into the wee small hours!!

Sunday morning saw the traditional church service (in the hotel) followed by the very entertaining RAFA area band to round things off. All too soon though we were heading East on the M4 motorway and back to reality! Roll on 2013!
